From below Harlech Castle the route takes you North along an old canal on the Dwyryd Estuary, the supply route for Harlech Castle. We then turn inland and pass Lasynys, former home of author Eliss Wynne, preserved by a trust and open to the public. Thought to date from 16th Century with stonework from the late Elizabethan Era, it is believed that the tide once surrounded the rock on which the house is built. A long, gradual, climb through ancient woodlands takes you up to Merthyr Farm and the uplands, dotted with an abundance of hut circles, standing stones, ring cairns and stone circles. The route with panoramic views takes us back to Harlech, with plenty of places for a visit, tea shops and the Castle. The descent back to the start will be down Ffordd Pen Llech, which by the time you visit, could possibly have been crowned the world’s steepest road, replacing the one from New Zealand in the Guinness Book of Records.
