Starting at the ancient church of Saint Tanwg , known as “the church in the sand”, St Tanwg’s church is found nestled in the sand dunes, where the mountains meet the sea, at Llandanwg. It is thought that it is one of the oldest places of continuous Christian worship in the UK and was probably founded by Saint Tanwg around 435 AD. The existing building has been on the site since the early middle ages and over its many years has been frequently dug out of the sand, as it constantly encroaches and buries it. From inside the simple stone walls you can hear the waves on the beach even on the stillest day. Soaked in the prayers of 2000 years, it is a place widely acknowledged to be ‘thin’, rooted in the earth but within easy reach of heaven. It is a refuge of solace, simplicity and peace. After spending some time at the church you will make your way along the beach and turning inland towards Pensarn, climbing up past a burial chamber before circling back to skirt the village and back to Llandanwg where you could have a welcoming cup of tea.
[The church is usually open daily. If however you do find the church locked and wish to enter before or after the walk try contacting the Church Warden (01341 241269) between 10 am and 5 pm and if he is available he will come and open the church for you.]
