A moderate walk takes you to the fabled Bryn y Castell (The fort on the hill) connected with the story of Llew Llaw Gyffes in the Mabinogion. This Iron Age hillfort perched on a small hill in remote moorland above the Roman Road known as Sarn Helen. (Named after two women Elen the wife of Magnus Maximus and Helena, mother of Constantine the Great) Excavations in the late 1970’s revealed the foundations of wooden houses and many stone buildings inside the rampart, as well as the remains of smelting furnaces and iron debris. It was occupied from the late Iron Age until the arrival of the Romans. Return past the fabled lake of Llyn Morwynion. (Where the maidens drowned running backwards) a tale from the Mabinogion.
